The renter-friendly toolkit
These are the only kinds of changes our designer is allowed to suggest:
- Peel-and-stick wallpaper on one accent wall, and peel-and-stick backsplash tiles in kitchens and bathrooms.
- Curtains on tension rods or adhesive hooks instead of drilled brackets.
- Area rugs and runners over existing carpet or floors.
- Plug-in and rechargeable lamps instead of new fixtures.
- Freestanding shelves, leaning mirrors and art on picture ledges or leaned on furniture.
- Plants, bedding, pillows and throws.
What we never suggest in a rental
- Paint or any wall treatment that needs repainting.
- New flooring, built-ins or replaced fixtures.
- Drilled shelves or wall-mounted TVs.
- Moving walls, doors or windows.
Before you stick anything to a wall
- Read your lease for rules on adhesives, nails and wallpaper.
- Test peel-and-stick wallpaper and adhesive hooks in a hidden spot for a few days, then peel slowly.
- Avoid adhesives on freshly painted or textured walls; they can lift paint.
- Take photos of walls and floors on move-in day so you can prove their condition later.
Frequently asked questions
What is a renter-friendly makeover?
A makeover that uses only changes you can remove without damage when you move out: removable wallpaper, rugs, no-drill curtains, plug-in lighting, freestanding furniture, plants and textiles.
Is renter-friendly peel-and-stick wallpaper really removable?
Usually, on smooth walls with sound paint. It can lift paint on fresh, cheap or textured finishes, so test a small piece in a hidden spot first and check your lease.
Can the AI guarantee my landlord will approve?
No. It only suggests removable changes, but every lease is different. Ask your landlord if you are unsure.
