Coastal without the clichés
- A blue and white stripe accent wall in peel-and-stick wallpaper behind the bed is the strongest single move.
- A natural seagrass or jute rug for texture underfoot.
- Navy and sand striped bedding or cushions, layered with white.
- Whitewashed or pale wood furniture and a woven seagrass lamp.
- White linen curtains on a tension rod to keep the light soft.
- One piece of ocean photography or an abstract blue print instead of nautical décor.
Where Coastal works best
Bedrooms and bright small spaces suit Coastal most, because the blue and white palette is calm and makes walls recede. In a darker room, use more sand and white and limit navy to textiles so the space does not feel cold. In a studio, repeating the stripe in both the wall and the bedding ties the whole room together, as in the example below.
Coastal vs Scandinavian
Both are light and airy. Coastal adds stronger blue, stripes and rougher natural fibers like seagrass, while Scandinavian stays mostly white and grey with smoother pale wood. If you want the brightness of Scandinavian with a bit more personality, Coastal is a good middle ground.
